After Pituitary What to Expect

1. Changes in physical appearance. After surgery, you may experience some changes in your physical appearance, such as:

* Head shaving: part or all of your hair may be shaved prior to surgery. This is to prevent infection.

* Swelling: Your face and neck may be swollen after surgery, especially around the incision site. This swelling should go down within a few days.

* Bruising: You may also have some bruising around the incision site. This bruising should also go away within a few days.

* Scar: You will have a scar after surgery. The scar will be located on your forehead or just below your nostril, depending on the type of surgery you had. The scar will fade over time, but it may never completely go away.

2. Changes in hormone levels. after surgery, your body will no longer produce pituitary hormones. This means you will need to take pituitary hormone replacement therapy (PHRT) for the rest of your life. PHRT will help to regulate your body's functions, such as growth, metabolism, and reproduction.

3. Follow-up care. After surgery, you will need to follow up with your doctor regularly. These follow-up appointments are important for monitoring your health and managing your PHRT.

Other things to expect after pituitary surgery:

* You may experience some pain after surgery. This pain is usually managed with pain medication.

* You may feel tired after surgery. This is normal, and it should go away within a few weeks.

* You may have some difficulty eating and drinking after surgery. This is due to the swelling and pain in your face and throat.

* You may have some changes in your vision. These changes are usually temporary and should go away within a few weeks.

* You may feel emotional after surgery. This is normal, and it is important to talk about your feelings with your doctor or a therapist.

* Recovery from pituitary surgery can take several months. Be patient and allow yourself time to heal.
