Before your cataract surgery, you will have a preoperative evaluation to:
- Check your vision
- Measure the size and shape of your eye
- Evaluate the health of your retina
- Discuss the type of anesthesia that will be used
- Arrange for someone to drive you to and from surgery.
- Avoid wearing eye makeup, perfume, or cologne on the day of surgery.
- Eat a light meal the day before surgery.
- Get a good night's sleep.
During cataract surgery, local anesthesia is typically used to numb the surgical area and prevent pain. The surgery usually lasts 20-30 minutes per eye.
Cataract surgery involves the following steps:
1. Corneal incision: The surgeon makes a small incision in the cornea, the clear front cover of your eye.
2. Phacoemulsification: Ultrasonic energy is used to break up the cloudy cataract into tiny pieces, which are then removed from the eye.
3. Intraocular lens (IOL) placement: A clear, artificial lens is implanted into the eye to restore vision.
4. Closure: The corneal incision is closed with sutures or self-sealing incisions.
After cataract surgery, you will be taken to a recovery room where you will be monitored for any complications. You will likely experience some discomfort, but it can usually be managed with pain medication.
The recovery time after cataract surgery varies depending on the individual, but most people are able to return to their normal activities within 2 weeks.
Your doctor will give you specific instructions on how to care for your eyes after surgery. These instructions may include:
- Avoiding strenuous activity
- Avoiding contact with water
- Wearing an eye shield
- Using antibiotic eye drops
You will need to have regular follow-up appointments with your doctor after surgery to monitor your progress and ensure that your eyes are healing properly.
