1. Physical examination
Your doctor will feel your abdomen for tenderness or pain. They may also listen for a bruit, which is an unusual sound that can be caused by a blocked bile duct.
2. Blood tests
Blood tests can measure the levels of certain enzymes and bilirubin in your blood. High levels of these substances can indicate gallbladder problems.
3. Ultrasound
Ultrasound is a painless imaging test that uses sound waves to create images of your gallbladder. It can show if there are any gallstones or other abnormalities in your gallbladder.
4. HIDA scan
A HIDA scan is a nuclear medicine imaging test that uses a radioactive tracer to track the flow of bile from your liver to your gallbladder and small intestine. It can help diagnose gallbladder problems, such as biliary dyskinesia.
5. MRCP
MRCP is a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) test that uses contrast material to create images of your bile ducts. It can help diagnose gallbladder problems, such as choledocholithiasis.
6. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)
ERCP is a procedure that combines endoscopy and X-rays to diagnose and treat gallbladder problems. During ERCP, a thin, flexible tube with a camera on the end is inserted into your mouth and guided down your esophagus and stomach into your small intestine. Contrast material is then injected into your bile ducts, and X-rays are taken. ERCP can be used to remove gallstones, dilate narrowed bile ducts, and treat other gallbladder problems.
The type of test that your doctor recommends will depend on your individual symptoms and medical history.
