What a Cheilectomy?

A cheilectomy is a surgical procedure to remove a bone spur from the joint of the big toe. The bone spur is usually located at the base of the big toe and can cause pain and inflammation.

The procedure is typically performed on an outpatient basis and takes about 30 minutes. The surgeon will make a small incision over the joint and remove the bone spur. The incision will then be closed with sutures.

After the procedure, the patient will need to wear a bandage and may need crutches to walk. They may also need to take pain medication. The patient will typically need to follow up with the surgeon several times to monitor their healing.

Recovery from a cheilectomy typically takes several weeks. The patient may need to wear a special shoe or brace to support the toe while it heals. They may also need to avoid certain activities, such as running or jumping.

In most cases, a cheilectomy is successful in relieving pain and inflammation caused by a bone spur. However, there is a small risk of complications, such as infection, bleeding, or nerve damage.
