Constipation in Breastfed Babies: Causes and How to Treat

Causes of Constipation in Breastfed Babies:

- Insufficient milk supply: If your baby is not getting enough milk, they may not have enough fluid in their stool to move it through their intestines.

- Changes in diet: Introducing solid foods or a new formula can sometimes cause constipation.

- Allergies or sensitivities: An allergy or sensitivity to a food or ingredient in your diet can lead to constipation.

- Medications: Certain medications, such as iron supplements, can cause constipation as a side effect.

- Medical conditions: Some medical conditions, such as hypothyroidism or celiac disease, can cause constipation.

How to Treat Constipation in Breastfed Babies:

- Increase your milk supply: If you think your baby may not be getting enough milk, talk to a healthcare professional about ways to increase your milk supply.

- Offer water: Once your baby is over six months old, you can offer them water to help soften the stools.

- Massage their tummy: Gently massaging your baby's tummy in a clockwise direction can help to stimulate the bowels and promote movement.

- Use a warm bath: A warm bath can help to relax your baby's muscles and stimulate the bowels.

- Use glycerin suppositories: Glycerin suppositories can help to soften the stool and make it easier for your baby to pass.

- Change their diet: If your baby has started solids, try removing any foods that may be causing constipation. You may also want to try adding foods like prunes, peaches, or pears, which can help to soften the stools.

When to See a Doctor:

If your baby's constipation does not improve with home treatment, or if they are vomiting, have a fever, or any other signs of illness, contact a healthcare professional.
