QuestionI've always had heavy legs and after losing weight I have lots of loose skin that looks unsightly. I hear alot about breast surgery etc. but rarely hear about leg surgery. In your field I'm sure you have come across people with the same problem. I am looking for the best surgeon to do the job. Is there anyone you would recommend and if not where should I look to find one?
AnswerDear Alda,
Actually many people who have lost massive weight after bariatric surgery seek to have excess skin on the legs lifted or removed. (Often to correct what they call "shar-pei" thighs, where skin hangs in ripples towards the knees). If I know what part of the country you are in, I can give you some names of experienced plastic surgeons in your area who do this procedure. Otherwise, I recommend the following:
1) Ask your bariatric surgeon who they refer to - chances are they have a list of plastic surgeons they recommend
2) Look at the following web site: http://www.bariatricworkshop.com/
This is an upcoming specialty course being offered by the American Society of Bariatric Surgery on body contouring after massive weight loss. Take a look of the faculty list and see who is near you - these are some of the top people in the country doing these procedures - althought there are a few outstanding exceptions (Dennis Hurwitz, MD in Pittsburgh and Timothy Katzen in Los Angeles are not speaking).
3) I always suggest you speak to more than one plastic surgeon, look at their portfolio, and have an in-depth consult.
Best of luck to you in your ongoing journey!
Dr. Jacques
