QuestionMy husband is considering having either Gastric Bypass or Lap-band procedure done but is unsure which would be better. He is about 550lbs, and 5?1? He has a history of diabetes and hypertension. His doctor suggested Lap-band because he said it is less invasive. I am wondering if that is the best choice considering his current weight. My mother had undergone Gastric Bypass 3yrs ago and when she inquired about the Lap-band her doctor informed her that it was mainly for people needing to lose only about 100 lbs. Have things changed? Do you have any recommendations or know of any questions I should be asking?
AnswerSara,
There are many factors that ought to be considered in the choice between gastric bypass and Lap-Band. Both of these are valid procedures that result in much better health through weight loss in the vast majority of cases.
My experience has been that gastric bypass produces more reliable weight loss, and the total amount of weight loss one can expect is greater. I caution you that other factors should be considered, and these factors should include at least the following:
-your husband's preference
-the comfort level of the surgeon with each procedure
For my patients who are trying to decide, I strongly encourage them to spend time with patients who have had each procedure by attending each type of support group. You and your husband can get a feel for how patients live with each procedure and how they feel about their choice in each case.
Best Wishes!
Dr JP
