Type of Gastric Bypass Surgery

Question
I am considering Gastric Bypass Surgery and have recently read about something
called a mini Gastric Bypass.  One of the things mentioned is that they cut the
vagus nerve in this surgery.  Does that happen with all Gastric Bypass surgeries?
Also, which do you recommend?

Answer
Yvonne,
For the most part, surgeons who do a true Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass procedure do not cut or clip the Vagus nerve.

I can't be sure about what you are reading and considering, but I to advise you to avoid the "Mini Gastric Bypass."  The problem is that the Mini Gastric Bypass is not a true gastric bypass, and it is susceptible to a number of long term complications that do not occur with standard bariatric surgical procedures.  Also, my experience is that surgeons who perform the Mini Gastric Bypass do not participate in patient follow up as befits the best interest of the patient.

I believe that the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and the Lap-Band can both provide excellent outcomes.  My approach in most cases is to inform patients thoroughly and to let them decide.

Best of luck!
Dr JP
