QuestionI have heard great things about AchievOne protein, and have found great prices at http://www.ibariatric.com but my question is because it contains caffeine, is it ok for my stomach. I am 4 months post op for bariatric surgery. I thought caffeine was a no no, but I see a lot of people drinking them and raving about them? Is caffeine ok, for a 4 month post op? If not when will it be ok?
Thank You,
Jessica
AnswerHi Jessica,
Most bariatric surgeons would really prefer that you stay away from caffeine - especially early on after surgery as you are - because it is a strong irritant to your stomach/pouch and can increase your risk of marginal ulcer. It can also have a negative impact on nutrition - especially calcium and some of the B-vitamins. My general advice would be to avoid caffeine unless you absolutely cannot live without it. That said, all surgeons have different "rules" about if and when you can introduce caffeine, so it is probably best if you ask your program. If you just like the taste of coffee, consider getting a plain, vanilla or chocolate protein powder and adding some decaffeinated coffee to it for a coffee "fix."
Please let me know if you have any additional questions.
