QuestionI am a patient with a colostomy stemming from rectal cancer, diagnosed in 2002. I have been in remission from the cancer since treatment ended in 2004. I am currently 5'10" weighing 389 lbs. I was originally diagnosed with Chron's Disease in 1991, but haven't had a flare up since my cancer surgery. Would I qualify for the Lap Bamd procedure?
AnswerShanna,
Given your history, you might find that some bariatric surgeons do not want to operate on you. I think you would have a harder time if you were seeking a gastric bypass, but you probably should be able to qualify for a gastric band. I would suggest that you find a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence in your area (you can find one here: www.surgicalreview.org/). Most doctors will let you set up a consult very easily. Find a doctor who does a lot of Bands and has a good after care program for adjustments, dietary counseling, etc.
I hope this helps.
Please let me know if you need more information.
