QuestionI had a lap-band fitted in the UK in May 2008, I need to go into hospital to have key-hole surgery on my shoulder as I have some calcium build-up.
Can you advise me as to whether I need to have my band emptied?
Some people have advised me to but have also read that it shouldn't be a problem. What are your thoughts?
AnswerSarah,
I will tell you my usual practice, but I want to emphasize that you really should follow the advice of your Band surgeon.
In my practice, when patients undergo minor surgical procedures (such as key-hole surgery for the shoulder), I do not always take fluid out the Band. If there is any sign of obstruction before or after surgery (heartburn, throwing up, etc), then fluid ought to be taken out of the Band until body swelling goes down.
Best of luck with your surgery and your Band,
Dr JP
