Stomaphyx

Question
Do you perform the stomaphyx procedure? I saw it on the news last night. Also do you perform this if I have had gastric bypass, and the pouch has stretched?

Answer
Malinda,
You are correct that the idea with the Stomaphyx is to reduce the size of a stomach pouch that has expanded after gastric bypass.  The literature reports seem to indicate that it provides several months of improved restriction, and then the stomach returns to its earlier shape and capacity.

Because the results seem to be temporary, I have not pursued the Stomaphyx as part of my practice.  The procedure is fairly low risk, but also seems to have fairly small benefit in terms of improved weight control.

Best wishes,
Dr JP
