QuestionHello. I had gastric bypass a year ago this month and I am worried that my pouch has completely gone back to it's size before surgery. I drink carbonated drinks in small amounts but i am still worried. How can I make sure that I eat right so that I am full easilly?
AnswerThank you for your question which is complicated as there are several issues which could be involved, some medical in nature - these I can not address. Having said that I strongly encourage you to consult with your surgeon, as only he can definitively answer this. I will offer my thoughts, however please make an appointment for a medical assessment.
If you are not eating well or overeating then I suggest you seek counseling as many begin to put weight on after 12-18 months - it is a delicate period and one within which you need to be vigilant. If you're drinking small amounts of carbonated beverages that may or may not be the problem. It sounds like the issue is you feel you're overeating.
Watch portion sizes and work toward eating small meals at more frequent intervals. I have some other suggestions but I strongly recommend you see your surgeon for an examination before exploring.
Finally I would like to reiterate my recommendation to seek counseling. The weight comes back pretty quickly if you change your eating - the surgery is a tool in maintenance, but will not prevent you from overeating over time.
Please let me know how it goes.
Valerie
