Hypothryroidism

Question
HI,
I read a previous answer regarding hypothyroidism effecting the benefits of gastric bypass or vertical sleeve. I was born with no thyroid at all and have taken synthroid since birth. And I've faught my weight since adalescence. My mother has type 1 diabetes and congenitive heart disease. My last physical indicated that my cholesterol is high and I am just tired of being overweight. I'm turning 40 in a few months and I want to lose weight and be healthy so I can be here for my son; I'm a single parent.
What are the chances I will be denied for surgery for this? If I have absorption problems, post op, how will I get my thryoid meds in? I'm very careful about taking my 300 mcg everyday on an empty stomach.

Answer
Martha,
Thanks for writing!

The facts are:
1) Having the diagnosis of hypothyroidism will not interfere with success after bariatric surgery, as long as your thyroid levels are adjusted properly going into surgery.

2) Patients can absorb thyroid meds after bariatric surgery (including gastric bypass and gastric sleeve).  Many patients need to have their dose adjusted as their weight comes down and as metabolism changes, but there are minimal problems keeping thyroid levels adjusted.

Best wishes!
Dr JP
