QuestionHi: I have just made my decision to pursue the bypass surgery, I am 42 years old and my BMI is 40.4, I have lost weight many times, the last weight loss was 110lbs (5 years ago) through a strict diet program, but each time I lose it, It comes right back. I am now on the Weight watchers program for the 4th time but have not lost any weight. I also have Fibromyalgia and have been told that my condition would improve with weight loss If I wanted to go to the US and have the surgery there, what would my first step be? can I bring the application form to my Dr? I found it online or would my Dr. have to first sign me up for the registry, then I would wait to be seen at a Canadian Center. There seems to be some recent changes to the process that have happened as of Oct, 2010. is there any way for me to speed up the approval process if I am able to drive to the US, I could even drive there for a consult if I needed to. I have read that wait times here at the center that is closest to me could be as long as 2-3 years.
Thank-you
Lisa
AnswerHi Lisa,
Sorry for the delay in my answer.
It is a great step forward for you to have downloaded the application and feel comfortable about taking it to your doctor. I would start there, he or she must generate the application in order for you to be seen by the Centre closest to you. Your first appointment there may not be scheduled until the application is received. From what I have been hearing, the process to screen appropriateness for surgical treatment in Ontario or through referral to US can be years. Perhaps if your diet or other programs were physician or healthcare professional supervised, you can hasten through the process.
Unfortunately, I do not know of any way to speed things up if you are seeking OHIP approved surgery. The only other consideration I can offer to you is to pay out of pocket for your care.
With either path you chose, I advise you to seek quality of care.
Good luck to you and thank you for your question.
