Pain near portal

Question
Karla, I had lab band surgery about 4 weeks ago. I feel really good and have lost 19 lbs; however, I am still having some pain where my port is. If I move certain ways, laugh to hard, sneeze, etc I can really feel it. If I also try to sleep on my side it's uncomfortable. Is this normal to still have pain/discomfort like this 4 weeks later? It's not constant or really painful just uncomfortable and catches my attention several times a day.  Also, should I be able to feel the port? I have read some blogs and people did not even know where there's was located. I know exactly where mine is and it seems really close to the top of my skin (if that makes sense). I just want to make sure what I'm feeling is normal.

Answer
Hi Angela:

Congratulations on your surgery.  Honestly, port pain really varies among people--because placement varies.  At 4 weeks, I wouldn't expect much pain--so, as I'm guessing you're getting near the time of your first fill, I'd ask your surgeon.  Do you notice anything different in looking at your port scar vs. your other scars from the lap surgery? If so, then I'd bring that up.  Usually, as the port incision is larger--it does take longer to heal.  That's pretty normal.  But actual pain--it should be pretty minimal by now.  At one time, they used to do sternal ports (just below the sternum at the xiphoid process) and those were easily palpable.  Heck, when you lied down, you could see the darn thing. :)  The abdominal ports are usually less obvious, but yes, you should be able to feel it.  It's actually good that you can find it, because it means that whomever does your fills will be able to eaily find it as well.

I do think your well within the range of normal, but I'd ask at your first fill just to be on the safe side.  Congratulations again!  You're going to be amazed once you have your first fill and discover what restriction is.

Kind Regards,
Karla
