Bloating 101: Why You Feel Bloated

- Other medical conditions: Bloating can also be a symptom of various medical conditions, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, diverticular disease, and cancer.

In most cases, bloating is a temporary problem that will go away on its own. However, if you experience severe bloating accompanied by other symptoms such as abdominal pain, fever, or weight loss, it is essential to see a doctor to rule out any underlying medical problems.

To help reduce bloating, you can try the following tips:

- Eat slowly and chew your food thoroughly. This will help you to swallow less air while eating.

- Avoid foods that trigger bloating for you. Common triggers include beans, broccoli, cabbage, dairy products, and gluten-containing foods.

- Increase your fiber intake gradually. A diet high in fiber can help to prevent constipation and reduce bloating. Good sources of fiber include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes.

- Drink plenty of fluids. Water can help to flush out excess sodium and reduce water retention. Avoid sugary drinks, such as soda and juice, as they can worsen bloating.

- Get regular exercise. Exercise can help to improve digestion and reduce constipation.

- Try over-the-counter gas medications. These medications can help to reduce gas and bloating.

- Talk to your doctor about prescription medications. If you have a medical condition that is causing bloating, your doctor may prescribe medications to help manage your symptoms.
