Here is a closer look at the steps involved in how fat leaves the body:
1. When you reduce your calorie intake or increase your physical activity, your body enters a state of negative calorie balance. This means that you are burning more calories than you are consuming.
2. As a result of this calorie deficit, your body begins to break down stored glycogen for energy. Glycogen is a type of carbohydrate that is stored in your liver and muscles.
3. Once your glycogen stores are depleted, your body starts to break down fat cells for energy. This process is called lipolysis.
4. Lipolysis occurs when hormones called catecholamines, such as adrenaline, bind to receptors on fat cells. This causes the fat cells to release fatty acids into the bloodstream.
5. The fatty acids are then transported to the liver, where they are converted into glucose or ketones for energy.
6. If the fatty acids are not used for energy, they are stored as triglycerides in fat cells. This is how you gain weight.
When you lose weight, you are essentially reversing this process. You are burning stored fat and reducing the size of your fat cells. As your fat cells shrink, your body will start to look leaner and more toned.
It is important to note that losing weight too quickly can be unhealthy and can lead to muscle loss. Therefore, it is important to lose weight gradually and at a healthy pace. Aim to lose 1-2 pounds per week by reducing your calorie intake by 500-1,000 calories per day and exercising regularly.
