Vacation time is upon us, and amidst the traveling, the preparation and the stress of money, you are excited just to relax.
With relaxation and travel, however, comes the temptation for an occasional cocktail, and a desire to try the local fare. If you are about to hit the beach, jet-set to Europe, or just relax in your own backyard, here are 5 tips to help you avoid weight gain while enjoying your vacation.
5. Don’t Forget the Basics
When vacationing, don’t forget the basics of weight loss: healthy foods and exercise.
Sure, you can indulge every once in a while in the occasional cocktail and dessert, but just stay your ground when it comes to meals.
Make sure whatever you eat has a good source of protein. If you are visiting the Caribbean, look for a local fish dish that can be prepared to your liking, or do your research ahead of time if you are jet-setting to Europe. Search out local fare that fits within your diet, but that you can still enjoy.
If you are going to have a drink, limit it to one or two. Avoid beer, if possible, or choose red wine. Just monitor your intake, and alternate water between alcoholic beverages to stay hydrated.
4. Don’t Overeat When Eating Out
Eating out is probably the biggest threat to your weight loss when on vacation. In preparation for this, it may be wise to select your restaurant choices before your departure.
If you are renting a house or staying in a hotel that has a kitchen, take advantage. If traveling with your family or a group of friends, stay in for a couple of nights and cook for yourselves. Sometimes never leaving the comforts of your hotel can be the most enjoyable parts of your vacation.
Go to the local grocery store, visit a local farmer’s market and try to cook a local recipe that’s healthy—or, just stick to what you know.
3. Make the Time to Exercise
When on vacation, take advantage of your surroundings and make time to exercise. If resorting near beautiful mountains or hills, plan a day to spend in the outdoors and go hiking.
If you find yourself close to a serene, tropical landscape, go for an early morning/early afternoon beach run. If traveling with friends and family, bring them with you.
After all, fitness can be a lot more fun if you are in a group.
2. Don’t Skip Breakfast
Whether traveling by plane, train or automobile, make sure that you pack some of your own healthy foods so that you never go hungry or skip breakfast. This is especially important if you are traveling through the night and early in the morning.
Always, always, always eat breakfast. Eating breakfast first thing in the morning will keep your metabolism going, but it will also make you less likely to eat unhealthy during the day. This way, you won't have the urge to binge on sugary and unhealthy foods.
1. Embrace Portion Control
It’s okay to indulge on vacation, but it may be a good idea to eat a variety of foods in smaller portions while on vacation.
Remember: a key component of weight loss is making sure you are eating enough food to help you feel satisfied, but not overstuffed.
Instead of eating a big three course meal, get a good sampling of about 3 or 4 healthy appetizers and share them with friends or your significant other.
Eating a healthier sampling is better than over-indulging, and you can still enjoy the food without feeling over-stuffed.
