Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measure that estimates the amount of body fat based on height and weight. BMI Calculation
The formula to calculate BMI is as follows:
BMI = weight in kilograms / (height in meters)2
For example, a person who is 1.7 meters tall and weighs 70 kilograms has a BMI of 24.
What Does BMI Measure?
BMI is primarily a measure of body density. It provides a general indication of whether a person's weight is proportionate to their height, and whether they may be underweight, overweight, or obese. BMI is not a perfect measure of body fat, as it doesn't take into account factors such as muscle mass and body composition. However, it can serve as a useful screening tool and is commonly interpreted as follows:
BMI Classification:
- Underweight: BMI less than 18.5
- Normal Weight: BMI between 18.5 and 24.9
- Overweight: BMI between 25 and 29.9

Limitations of BMI
While BMI is a widely used measure, it has some limitations:
- Body Fat Distribution: BMI doesn't distinguish between body fat distribution. Some individuals may have higher BMIs because of muscle mass rather than excessive body fat.
- Muscle Mass: BMI doesn't account for differences in muscle mass. People with higher muscle mass may have BMIs that fall into the overweight or obese category, despite having a healthy body fat percentage.
- Body Type: BMI may not accurately classify individuals with certain body types. For example, people with broad shoulders or larger frames may have higher BMIs than others of the same height and weight.
Despite these limitations, BMI remains a simple and widely available tool for assessing body weight status and associated health risks. However, it's recommended to consult with healthcare professionals for a more comprehensive assessment of body composition and overall health.
