Stress and Obesity - Important Things You Might Not Be Aware of

Have you ever stopped to wonder about what you put yourself into when you get stressed? When you're trying to meet a deadline, for example, you try to "steal" from your sleeping hours by giving yourself a caffeine fix to stave off sleep. To add energy, you ingest lots and lots of chocolate. When the effect wears off before you have finished your work, you give yourself another cup of coffee and eat more sweets to prevent the ultimate crash from happening. This results in sleep-deprivation, excess-calorie consumption and ultimately, obesity.

Stress and obesity are inextricably intertwined. When a stressed-out lifestyle becomes the norm, ingesting loads upon loads of simple sugars, caffeine and even alcohol lead to lesser sleeping hours and corresponding weight gain. In a rush, meals are often skipped (breakfast is the one most commonly sacrificed in a bid to beat rush hour traffic). Snacking on junk food every couple of hours just to give the body the fuel it needs to keep going throughout the day is then considered normal. Exercise, too, does not anymore have a place in the life of a stressed individual, further aggravating the factors that ultimately lead to obesity.

If there is something that every worker needs to understand, it's this: Stress is an inevitable fact of life. It's something that is constant, unchangeable. But our reaction to it is something that we have control over. How we deal with stress is something that is within our power to manage and alter. If you choose to let the demands of your boss and the pressures of the job get a hold of you, you will ultimately suffer the consequences brought about by stress and obesity. However, you can opt to face it with your health and the quality of life you give to yourself and your family as your top priority.

Often, dealing with office pressures is simply a matter of setting priorities and sticking with them. Self-management is what it's all about. If you are the head of certain department or section of your company and have a number of people directly under your supervision, note that little interruptions for questions and clarifications regarding how a job is supposed to be done or other office concerns can take up a huge chunk of your time and lead you to bringing reports and other unfinished business at home. Instead of spending time with your family, getting enough sleep or using this time for exercise, you spend more hours fiddling the keys of your computer just to finish a report for a board meeting the next day. More cups of coffee, more sugar fixes. Stress and obesity ultimately result.

What can you do? In the above-mentioned case, you can choose to set up a certain hour or two during the day to entertain questions. The rest of the time, you must not be disturbed. This leaves you to finish work that needs to be done and enables you to actually live a life outside of your career. Don't fall prey to the vicious cycle of stress and obesity. Remember that a healthy lifestyle is a choice. Choose it.
