It's pretty much accepted that there is an obesity epidemic taking place. For the first time in human history, there are more overweight people, than there are starving people.
There are a number of factors as to the reasons why more and more people are gaining weight. The point is that no one thing will solve this problem. Unfortunately some of the factors are beyond the control of most of us, and the chances of this epidemic retreating, seem to be fairly small. Below are some things that you may want to think about.
First of all, it doesn't take a genius to work out that we have become less active in our daily lives. In our places of work, where much of the production of goods used to be done manually, are now one by machine and computers.
Where we used to spend a lot of or free time outside, we now stay inside our homes for most of the time. This is because we have so many ways to entertain ourselves at home. Many people spend up to 40 hours a week just watching television. Most of us don't even work these hours in our jobs.
It has been said that video games is a major culprit in the obesity epidemic. This is especially true for our kids. Spending hours and hours tapping fingers on video controllers, isn't doing much for the health of our kids.
Everyone looks towards fast food as being one of the major causes of obesity. It's true that more of us rely on fast food for our nutrition today. The reasons for this are that first of all, it's time cheap. Meaning that fast food takes minutes to prepare, and everyone wants more time. The funny thing is that although we all know that fast food has an impact on obesity, we still buy it.
Another factor is pollution. Virtually all the food that we eat is polluted in one way or another. It is polluted by the air, by chemicals which are used to grow it, by chemicals which are sprayed onto it, and by chemicals which are added to it to extend shelf life. Because of what we put into our bodies, we too have become polluted.
Chemicals are man-made, and therefore not natural. We on the other hand are natural beings filling ourselves with unnatural fuels. Something has to give., or are we already seeing the signs with the obesity epidemic which is surrounding us? Don't be surprised if years from now, people will look back in horror at the dangerous additives we used to put into our food.
What can we do? The truth is that we have to take responsibility for our own health. Don't look towards placing your health into the hands of others. It is your body and no one will care about it as much as you should. There are things that we can all do. We can exercise more and we can try to cut down on processed foods. We need to do something if we want to avoid becoming another statistic in the obesity epidemic.
