This is really crazy but my research has demonstrated that the TV is probably one of the biggest reasons for obesity in this country today, especially in children but also in many adults.
In my survey I found that on the whole few familes sit down for a family meal every single day (only around one in ten). But what shocked me more was only 60% of people ever sit down for a meal at a table.
Want to know what is to blame for this? It's the TV! Let me give you a couple of typical scenario's of what I am refering to as TV food syndrome.
1. If you have a young child you put them in front of the TV to play or watch DVD's but rather than disturb their viewing to eat you give them their food whilst sat in front of the TV. But you need to give them easy to eat finger food so they don't need any thing to eat it with or spill any. This usually consists of things like chips, fries, burgers or hot dogs or shaped chicken nuggets. Or if it's cold food jelly or peanut butter sandwiches are most peoples choice.
This is great food for you to prepare as it takes minutes and no effort, but it's lousy food for your child it's packed full of fats, carbs, salt and other hamful chemicals and chemical additives all bad for your childs health now and in the future.
More often than not this will be accompanied by a drink of chemical and sugar filled soda and cookies or some form of candy all full of carbs and unhealthy fats. If you are doing this for your kids you need to STOP IMMEDIATELY! Before you damage your kids health for good.
2. This happens across the US almost every day also. You get home from a busy day (possibly stressed and unrelaxed). You don't feel like cooking so you decide to grab a meal from the freezer and put it in the microwave or call out for a takeaway. Normally you'll end up eating this in front of the TV on your lap. This means you focus is on your favorite programs hardly even noticing what you are put in your mouth.
I doubt by the time you have finished eating you even know what it was you had for the meal and certainly wasn't focused on what you were eating.
Why not try something radical next week and get your kids to sit at a table and eat real food not finger food or junk food.Better still why not do this for the whole family at least one day a week (in a room with no TV). Cook your family a special meal don't worry to much at this stage what it is.We can work on that later.
Once you start to think about the quality and type of food your family eat rather than eating on autopilot you'll all eat less and enjoy good food more and will start to recognised the junk food as the gargbage food it really is which is the major reason for obesity in kids and adults.
