Obesity in dogs is on the rise. Veterinarians say that over half the dogs they see are overweight. The statistics could be worse since veterinarians don't see all dogs. Some dogs are not fortunate enough to have regular visits with the local veterinarian who would monitor weight gains and off solutions. But the problem of obesity can be managed with diet and exercise. Sound familiar? It is the same for people. Eating healthy, avoiding snacks and participating in regular exercise is a win-win solution for both pet owner and pet.
One of the common excuses for not exercising is time. Well, your pet depends on you to find the time for that exercise. All dogs need exercise, some more that others. But all dogs need exercise - the big ones and even the little ones. Why? The benefits of regular exercise include:
- Keeping the heart healthy
- Keeping the joints strong
- Keeping the weight down
- Burning off excess energy.
Dogs need to burn energy. It is best if they burn that energy while exercising. If you don't have the time to exercise with your dog you should consider some alternatives like doggy day care, a back yard dog run, a dog treadmill or dog walkers or dog runners. Paying someone to exercise you dog is a growing business. Playing fetch with your dog is also good exercise for your dog. Swimming is great fun and exercise too. Finding toys that require your dog to work for a reward would also be a good choice. Your dog will be happier with exercise and will be less likely to be mischievous.
So what do you say? Both of you need to get off the couch and get outside and have some fun on that walk! Take the time and you will both be healthier for it!
