Obesity Is Not A Look Related Issue But A Disease

Obesity is one of the biggest health related problems that we are confronting today. Many developed countries have placed obesity under the category of endemic disease. The problem with obesity is that unlike most other diseases, there are many reasons which can cause obesity. Theses reasons can be psychological as well as physical. The risk is that obesity can increase the chances of other diseases like blood pressure, depression, cancer and heart related diseases. Besides all these health problems there are also cases when a person can't find a job because of his obesity.

Obesity not only increases health risk for an individual but also can put a lot of pressure on the health infrastructure of a nation. Obesity can increase the cost of health care manifold.

By not acting now, we are not only risking our health today but also making life difficult for the future generation to come. With the increase in obesity the risk of other life threatening diseases also increases. For example cases of diabetes are also steadily increasing with the increase in obesity level. Similarly high prostrate cancer cases can also be linked to obesity. There are some studies which conclude that obesity can increase the risk of cancer in women. Some studies also show that obesity in now a worldwide problem. However its extent is still greater in developed countries than in developing countries.

For fighting obesity a sustained effort is required from all concerned parties. At an individual level going for workout for an hour or two is not going to help much. A concentrated effort is required to get rid of obesity. This will include workout and controlled diet containing low fat and fiber rich food. In most cases psychological help is also required. Psychological help will make it much easier for you to change your existing lifestyle and adapt a new one. Additionally, if you can get the support of your family, it will be an added advantage.

At the national level government should make strict laws, so that fast food companies can decrease the quantity of fat form their food. Schools should also teach their students the benefits of healthy living. They should promote more sports and other physical activities and if necessary schools should ban all the food which contains high quantity of fat from their canteen.

Some of these steps may look extreme in nature but they are necessary if we want to end this surge in obesity. However we should also be careful that we are promoting healthy living. Some people especially women confuse healthy living with zero size figure. We should not go from one extreme to another.
