Weight Loss - Can Obesity Be Caused By Stress

If you are overweight you may feel that this fact has a tendency to cause you to have higher levels of stress and anxiety. Obesity and stress are truly connected, although obesity is generally not the problem but the result of some other problem. The real cause of obesity is usually connected to an underlying core problem hidden beneath the surface. Let's discover how obesity and stress connect.

Obesity or being overweight is generally caused by one of the following:
- Stress
- Boredom
- Pressure
- Poor self image
- Tense lifestyle

According to statistics approximately forty percent of the America population is obese. Obesity is defined by being more than ten percent above their ideal weight.

The standard "ideal weight chart" suggests the following:
1. Women - one hundred pounds for the first five feet in height and five pounds per inch there after.
2. Men - one hundred fifteen pounds for the first five feet in height and five pounds per inch there after.

Therefore a woman five feet six inches should weight approximately 130 pounds where as a man six feet tall should weight 175 pounds. Of course there are adjustments for build and frame size but you will be able to tell that you are close to your ideal weight by looking at the mirror while wearing your bathing suit. If your pants or clothes fit tight and you feel uncomfortable then you are probably over weight.

The simple fact is by taking in more calories than you are able to burn to produce energy each day generally causes obesity. This imbalance causes your body to store the unused calories as fat. These are the facts; there is not way around the truth. Denying the problem does nothing but promote the issue. You may have heard "I can just look at food and put on weight", of course the real problem is that the food is going into their mouths. This is where denial aids in obesity.

I once had a friend that was on a diet and began to actually gain weight. He professed that he eat the diet food and was staying on the diet but was just doomed to gain weight. He later confessed that he was in fact eating the diet food but when he was out of the public eye he was eating cookies, cakes and other junk food because he felt hungry. He was in denial and could not gain any self-control. You really have to want to lose weight to actually lose weight.

If you are overweight and on the roller coaster of yo-yo weight gain then you need to look into lessening the stress in your life. Stress causes weight gain, weight gain causes more stress and it becomes a catch 22. It becomes a never-ending cycle of more stress more weight gain, more weight gain more stress. You must stop the insanity by changing your lifestyle habits to a healthier, fitter and less stressed life.
