Soft drinks alter metabolism, make losing weight harder

According to the findings of the study, drinking sugary drinks for just a month brings about alterations in the muscles which are similar to those in people with obesity problems and type 2 diabetes.

The altered muscles prefer to burn sugars over fats, thus making weight loss harder.

"This study proved our concerns over sugary drinks have been correct. Not only can regular sugar intake acutely change our body metabolism; in fact it seems that our muscles are able to sense the sugars and make our metabolism more inefficient, not only in the present but in the future as well," study's lead researcher, Dr. Hans-Peter Kubis of Bangor University in England said.

"This will lead a reduced ability to burn fat and to fat gain. Moreover, it will make it more difficult for our body to cope with rises in blood sugar. What is clear here is that our body adjusts to regular soft drink consumption and prepares itself for the future diet by changing muscle metabolism via altered gene activity -- encouraging unhealthy adaptations similar to those seen in people with obesity problems and type 2 diabetes," Kubis added.

The study
To reach to the conclusions, researchers recruited 11 people in their twenties. The participants were assigned sugar sweetened soft drink supplements for a month.

Before and after each intake of sugary drink the participants had their blood and muscle tissue, along with whole body metabolism and composition assessed.

Also, genes and proteins crucial for fat and sugar metabolism were analyzed and blood sugar and fat levels were measured and recorded for each participant.

Researchers found that drinking sugary beverages for just a month altered the metabolism, shifting it away from fat to sugar; activated the genes for inefficient sugar metabolism; reduced the genes of aerobic metabolism.

Furthermore, the participants reported higher fat and blood sugar levels.

The findings of the study are reported in the European Journal of Nutrition.
