By now it should be no surprise to hear that carrying a great deal of excess weight can drastically increase your risk of developing many different types of diseases and medical conditions. There are at least thirty medical issues that are currently linked directly to obesity. To help give you a better understanding of the crippling effects of obesity on your body, below are a few of the most common medical complications.
Cardiovascular Disease: Heart disease is a huge problem nowadays and is one of the leading causes of death in the US, UK and Canada. Being obese greatly increases the problem and causes the blood vessels to harden and clog, leading to decreased blood flow and other problems. It is preventable though and can be somewhat reversed as long as it is caught and you can change your lifestyle.
Type 2 Diabetes: With the abundance of sugary food available today then it is no wonder that obesity levels have risen, and when your blood always has high levels of sugar in it then you are at risk of type 2 diabetes. This means your body has become resistant to insulin as your body is constantly flooding your blood with it to try and clear out that excess sugar.
Body Pain: Body pain is another very common problem amongst obese individuals. Excess body fat puts the body under more stress, which causes a variety of joint and musculoskeletal pain. Back problems are also quite common and can be very debilitating. This form of pain often further prevents individuals from moving, which only continues to worsen their condition. This cycle can cause other health conditions and physical disabilities to arise.
Sleep Apnea: Obstructive sleep apnea is a condition that causes an individual to cease breathing for short periods of time during the night. Obesity, especially upper body obesity, is one of the main risk factors for this condition. Those who are obese have anywhere from a twelve to thirty times greater chance of developing sleep apnea than those who are of average weight.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: If you have ever suffered with carpal tunnel syndrome then you know it is not nice at all, especially when we often work on computers all day now. CTS is caused by compression of the median nerve which runs through the carpal tunnel, and causes a lot of pain to be experienced in the wrist/arm/shoulder/neck of the sufferer. Being overweight increases your chances of developing CTS by as much as four times.
Other obesity related conditions include: difficulty breathing, infertility, hiatil and other forms of hernias, acid reflux, skin conditions, depression, lower extremity edema, heel spurs, infections, cervical pain, skin folds, anterior abdominal wall masses, glandular problems, and musculoskeletal diseases.
