POSE Surgery General Guidelines

The POSE Procedure is a relatively new weight loss surgery procedure. It is a minimally invasive option dedicated to all those who wish to fight the condition of morbid obesity. POSE is standing for standing for Primary Obesity Surgery, Endoluminal.

The weight loss procedures we knew till now such as gastric bypass (otherwise known as the roux-en-Y surgery), gastric sleeve (sleeve gastrectomy), adjustable gastric banding (lap band) all laparoscopic procedures, but required a few small incisions on the abdomen. POSE (Primary Obesity Surgery, Endoluminal) is different and less invasive because is an incisionless surgical procedure done through the mouth of the patients with the help of an endoscope.

The Primary Obesity Surgery, Endoluminal (POSE) as well reduces the size of the stomach and diminishes the sensation of hunger. During the surgery a tube is inserted through the mouth of the patient and it is lead through the esophagus and placed in the stomach's spongy part. The inserted tube then it is locked and the bariatric surgeon will introduce the surgical instruments through this tube. With the help of these instruments the weight loss surgeon will clasp in strategic locations small stomach tissue parts. After this with an instrument called anchor the bariatric surgeon will suture the folds to hold them in place. With enough folds the size of the stomach is decreased to the desired size.

POSE (Primary Obesity Surgery, endoluminal) is done under general anesthesia; the procedure itself lasts about an hour. Being an inscisionless procedure the post-operative discomfort is minimized. Here are a few benefits of the POSE surgery:

  • leaves no visible scars
  • the recovery time is short
  • it is less invasive then the procedures known so far
  • it has low complication risks
  • gives long-term weight loss

The Primary Obesity Surgery showed excellent results. It is not yet covered by the insurance companies but for those who chose it financing options are available.
