The United States is waging a seemingly an uphill battle against obesity. Over the past three decades the rates of this condition have risen to such dramatic proportions that now approximately one third of American men and over 35 percent of American women are classified as obese. Roughly 17 percent of children and teenagers are obese as well. Those who are obese are at serious risk of a variety of health problems.
Obesity is measured by determining one's body mass index (BMI). This is accomplished using a statistical formula which includes a person's weight and height. Adults who are obese will have an BMI number of 30 and higher, whereas overweight is defined by a BMI over 25.
Obesity has several causes. Besides consuming too many calories and having an inactive and sedentary lifestyle, those with endocrine disruptors and people who are sleep deprived have an increased chance of being obese. Furthermore, though obesity is not hereditary per se, there is a genetic component to it.
There are a variety of dangers and health risks associated with this condition. First, it can lead to hypertension, heart disease and high levels of cholesterol and triglycerides. It can also result in gallbladder disease, respiratory complications, various forms of cancer, stoke, type 2 diabetes and sleep apnea.
Because of these potential dangers it is very important to consult a doctor about the various treatments. Treatments vary from dieting and exercise to medication and surgery. The overall goal of obesity treatment is twofold. First, the individual needs to reach a healthy weight. Second, they need to continue to maintain that weight. Therefore, the first type of treatment is weight loss, exercising, and changing in one's diet. All of these must be done in accordance with either a doctor or a health care professional. If after the necessary changes are made, and over time weight loss has not occurred, then prescription weight loss medications should be considered. A second form of treatment is weight loss surgery, also called Bariatric surgery. In this procedure part or all of the stomach is narrowed so that its capacity to hold food is limited, thus resulting in eventual weight loss.
Both treatments involving medicine and surgery involved certain risks and are not for everyone. Therefore, to determine if you are a suitable candidate for these types of treatments, you should consult your primary care physician.
If you are seriously overweight or obese, then is paramount that you take the appropriate steps in order to drastically reduce your weight level. Besides seeing your doctor, start exercising and eating a more nutritious and healthier diet. Schedule an appointment with a dietician to formulate a daily diet. And speak with a personal trainer to figure out a plan for getting shape and loss weight.
