Your Greatest Fast Weight-Loss Tip: Avoid Obesity

Over one-third of men and women over 20 years-old are considered obese. About one of every four children and teens are considered obese. Clearly, we have a problem with obesity in the United States.

While society and the government are trying to create systems, programs, incentives, and other solutions to reduce these numbers, the unfortunate trend is that the numbers are increasing rather than decreasing.

People are not necessarily getting obese because they are willfully trying to pack on the pounds. In fact, one out of ten people (or more) in America's population is on a diet at any given point in time. They are trying to lose weight for a variety of reasons: to look better, to feel better, and/or to be healthier. They have many, many options available to help them, so many that it is becoming more difficult to know what really works.

There are many choices of programs that do work, but few that keep the weight off over time. The undeniable truth is that those who are successful in losing weight tend to regain over half of it back within a year and nearly all of it back within 5 years.

The bottom line is that obesity has become America's largest public health issue. It is categorized as a complex disease of appetite control and metabolism involving environmental, cultural, and psychological factors, not to mention genetics, physiology, and biochemistry. Although we, including healthcare providers and insurance companies, see obesity as a problem of individual responsibility (too much consumption and not enough exercise), it should in fact be treated more as a disease that can literally take over one's life.

Let us all be responsible for our actions, but let's also recognize that obesity is a disease... a disease that can kill.
