Obesity is a chronic condition in which the excess stores of fat consistently build up in the body. A measure of obesity is the Body Mass Index. A BMI greater than 30 means that the individual is suffering from obesity. Obesity is a health condition that should not be ignored under any circumstances. The number of obese persons present today has more than doubled over the years with a recent study indicating that more than two thirds of the population in industrialized nations is obese and at great health risks.
If you think that being obese will not tax your health beyond just slowing you down or not letting you hike up the mountain track, you're sadly misinformed. Obesity increases the risk of many other chronic heart conditions such as diabetes, heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure, cancer, etc. leaving your obese condition untreated and unchecked is, therefore, no wise.
There are many causes of obesity, and it's not necessary that you are an avid eater to be obese. For starts, the work conditions that a majority of us face, desk jobs with long hours, long work weeks, etc, are all pushing the human race towards greater bulks. Also, some human beings inherit obesity from their parents; yes this is a genetics thing. In such circumstances, the individual's body type is such that actually converts calories to fat at an accelerated rate than normal. For whichever reason, and sometimes both occur with the same person, you should consult a physician. For women the obesity can also mean hormonal disturbances that can lead to problems as complex as infertility and failed pregnancies.
Diet that Will Help Control Obesity:
While you should not try to self medicate your obesity and see a qualified physician right away, there are certain diet changes that will help you to significantly reduce weight and improve your health.
1. Drink More Water: for starters, you should be drinking more water. If you've developed a love for the soft drinks and colas, it's time to kill cupid. These artificial drinks dehydrate your body, raise the acidity in your blood, raise blood sugar, and add to the toxins in your body instead of washing them out. Water on the other hand literally washes your body. It removes all toxins, rejuvenates your skin, it's a natural appetite suppressant and above all, when you drink lots of water, you actually lose weight because the water that your body cells had been storing is released; no more water retention.
2. Low Carbohydrates: lowering the carbohydrates in your diet such as white bread, refined cereals, refined flour, white sugar, etc can really help to keep off the calories. Try taking brown bread, brown sugar, whole grain, whole wheat, etc instead.
3. Unsaturated Fats: unsaturated fats like those found in olive oil, fish oil, avocado oil, etc are great for your health. Not only do they contain essential omega fats, they also take longer to digest, fill you up, have fewer calories, are good for the heart and hence, don't immediately add to your waistline. If you must have fat in your daily routine, go for the unsaturated kind. Avoid vegetable oils, margarine, butter and the likes.
