Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland, present in humans and animals, produces an insufficient amount of the thyroid hormone. The main cause for chronic thyroidism stems from an acute deficiency of iodine. However, in recent times, hypothyroidism is also caused by Hashimoto's thyroiditis, or an absence of the thyroid gland or hormonal deficiency from either the pituitary or the hypothalamus.
After childbirth, about 5 % of women may suffer from a condition called postpartum thyroiditis, which has also been monitored as a distinct cause of hypothyroiditis. In this condition, the primary state is generally hyperthyroidism, beyond which the thyroid usually returns to normalcy or could develop into hypothyroiditis.even though there remains a slender chance of a woman developing hypothyroiditis in this way, there have been cases where such conditions require life-long attention.
The most widespread cause of hypothyroidism is the presence of an often hereditary condition known as Hashimoto's thyroiditis. First discovered by Japanese physicist Hakaru Hashimoto, in 1912 where he observed that the body in this condition has a deficiency in making thyroid hormones. This is an auto-immune disease wherein the body's antibodies attack the thyroid tissue. Given the genetic nature of this condition, Hashimoto's thyroiditis can run in entire families. Women are observed to be more susceptible to this than men.
Another cause for hypothyroidism is sporadic inheritance. It is a condition that is passed on in the chromosomes of purebred dogs and emerges in subsequent breeding.

The Wolff-Chaikoff effect, explaining the increased intake of iodine can also facilitate the presence of hypothyroidism. This phenomenon impedes the adequate formation of the thyroid hormone within the thyroid follicle. This duly occurs when there is an abnormal level of iodine in the system. When the iodine levels subside the ‘escape phenomenon' is experienced and this sets in only after the Wolff-Chaikoff effect.
