Obesity Studies Show an Alarming Increase in Overweight Americans

When a person has a chronic condition in which he or she has excess fat in their bodies that is more than just being overweight, it is termed as being obese. Recent obesity studies in America tell us that, alarmingly as many as 65 per cent of Americans re overweight and as many as 31 per cent people are obese. These numbers show a constant rate of increase as the years goes by.

The Problem Has Become Epidemic

Thus, it is necessary for us to take the results of these obesity studies seriously if we want to be able to tackle this problem that is reaching epidemic proportions in the United States. This also shows that the incidence of childhood obesity in America has increased by a staggering 80 per cent in just the last ten years. Alarmingly for us all, when overweight children grow up, they will remain overweight and obese even in their adult years and thus won’t be able to enjoy a healthy life.

We do not really need any obesity studies to show us that obesity is a major risk factor that can lead people to suffer from a number of chronic diseases such as hypertension, certain kinds of cancers as well as osteoarthritis. In fact, according to five different obesity studies, the numbers of annual deaths that can be directly blamed on obesity can be put at about 280,000 adults in the United States.

No doubt, obesity is caused by a number of different factors that also include genetics as well as a person’s behavior. This is why it is necessary to conduct even more detailed obesity studies so that scientists would be able to find genetic targets in us humans who in turn may come up with new methods of treating the problem.

One of the many obesity studies that were conducted in the year 2003 and which was labeled as LABS or Longitudinal Assessment of Bariatric Surgery had its goal to study the benefits as well as risks involved in bariatric surgery that is used in extreme cases of obesity in adults. Doctors need such studies to evaluate the pros and cons of recommending such extreme measures to their patients; but at the rate at which obesity is spreading it seems like more people want to go under the knife.

However, while this may be prescribed under extreme circumstances; for the rest of us, the old fashioned eat less and move more mantra can work just as well.
