Obesity statistics are alarming and one has to read an internalize them to prevent from becoming another obesity statistic himself! According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), more than two thirds of Americans are overweight. That alone is a very sad but true fact and the worst part is that we are not doing much about these concrete facts and figures as we reach for another Coke and Whopper – or make that Triple Whopper with an XXL size Coke.
According to the same study on overweight and obesity statistics, 62 per cent of adult American women are overweight as opposed to 71 per cent of men. This difference could be because of more vanity and aging issues being prevalent amongst women as opposed to men who do not mind a bulging beer belly and a balding head as they grow older.
The statistics for obesity specifically are slightly lower but given that obesity is more serious a problem, the numbers are in no way comforting. The gender disparity is reversed in obesity statistics as 33 per cent of women and 30 per cent of men are obese.
It is extremely disheartening to see that children in America are bordering on obesity because of the couch potato, video gaming lifestyle and unhealthy snack foods they are consuming all the time. Parents are too busy working two jobs to make ends meet that they only have time for take out and buy children fancy video games instead of playing an old fashioned game of tag after a healthy home cooked dinner.
Around 18 per cent of children ages 6 to 11 and 17 per cent ages 12 to 18 are overweight according to the obesity statistics report released by the NIH.
The interesting thing that is revealed by these obesity statistics is that it is not an epidemic only in the lower echelons of society or only in a particular age group or ethnicity. This problem is so rampant that no segment of society is left behind. Everyone is lining up for easy, fast food and everyone is plopped in front of the television as their only means of relaxation.
These obesity statistics are meant to serve as an eye opener so that we start to brace ourselves to lead more healthy lifestyles and let our children emulate our active leisure time and healthy choices in eating. The obesity statistics are too alarming for us to just sit back and reach for another cookie.
