Having extra weight is a serious problem for many modern people. This is actually one of the main “first world problems”, since obesity is directly linked to heart disease, which is the main cause of death in any developed country. However, obesity is usually the result of our life’s choices and bad habits that many of us tend to have. In this article we will discuss the most popular habits that lead to weight gain.
Eating simple carbohydrates
Many of us have the ‘sweet tooth’ and this habit is almost unbreakable. People tend to give up smoking easier than they can give up candies. Many people even admit that they are addicted to sweets and have the habit of eating them every single day.
While we’re young this type of behavior might not do much harm, but as we get older, things drastically change. In general, foods that are made of simple carbs tend to have a very small nutritional value. Moreover, despite what you may think, they are also a very poor source of energy. This happens because simple carbs are quickly absorbed into the bloodstream, which triggers the body to rapidly turn them into fat in order to lower the blood sugar, thus making you feel hungry as early as about an hour later. This leads you to consume even more sweets, repeating the cycle.
Eating before going to bed
Actually, it depends on the type of food that you’re going to eat before bed. Some salary sticks, baby carrots, and a steamed piece of chicken will be fine. Despite what many popular diets may say, it is completely OK to eat raw vegetables and steamed or boiled meat or fish before bedtime.
However, some of you may think of munching down half-a-loaf of bread with some sweet yogurt before going to bed. Or you may even be in the habit of taking a nap after lunch in order to ‘allow the stomach to digest the food properly’. This type of behavior can only result in weight gain, since when you’re consuming carbohydrates, you should be doing something to burn off the energy that they provide you with.
Having a sedentary lifestyle
Nowadays, people tend to drive everywhere, even if their destination is located half-a-mile away from their house. Is it laziness or is it simply a habit? Probably the latter one. Some people even go as far as using one of those electric shopping carts in the mall to drive themselves around. Though some people in Europe will view this type of behavior as outrageous, people in United States are completely used to this.
Sedentary lifestyle not only leads to obesity, it also causes a number of other health problems including deep vein thrombosis, hemorrhoids, muscle atrophy, and diabetes. Despite all those consequences, even those people who are aware of them tend to stubbornly keep their old habits, refusing to acquire new, better habits of exercising regularly and eating wholesome food.
Unhealthy habits may lead to serious health problems the treatment of which may require buying drugs online. People who do care about their health and control their eating habits can prevent many obesity related diseases.
