What Is Exercise Bulimia and How It Treated?

Exercise bulimia is an eating disorder characterized by excessive exercise used as a means to burn off calories and/or to manage weight and shape. It is distinct from anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa, although it can be found in association with these disorders.

Symptoms

Signs and symptoms of exercise bulimia may include:

- Compulsive exercise despite injury, illness or bad weather.

- Intense fear of weight gain.

- Excessive monitoring or concern over weight or food.

- Severe calorie restriction or skipping of meals.

- Weight loss as well as malnutrition that may result in fatigue, poor concentration, and skin problems.

- Amenorrhea (cessation of menstruation) in women as well as low levels of testosterone in men.

- Use of laxatives, diuretics, or weight-loss supplements to further increase weight loss.

Treatment

Treatment for exercise bulimia may include:

- Restoring a healthy body weight.

- Recovering from malnutrition.

- Treating dehydration and electrolyte imbalances.

- Managing associated psychiatric conditions such as depression, anxiety.

- Learning to eat normal meals and snacks throughout the day.

- Developing coping mechanisms to deal with stress.

- Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to address the underlying thoughts, feelings, and behaviors related to exercise bulimia.

- Mindfulness training and relaxation techniques to help reduce anxiety and promote balance.

- Support groups or therapy sessions with others struggling with similar issues can provide a sense of belonging, validation, and the opportunity to share experiences and strategies for recovery.
