Stand up straight. Keep your head up and your shoulders back. Avoid hunching over or looking down at your feet.
Take long, even steps. Your steps should be about 2 feet long. To do this, plant your foot in front of you and then roll through your heel to your toe.
Swing your arms naturally. Your arms should swing back and forth from your shoulders. Don't swing them too hard, or you'll waste energy.
Keep your feet close to the ground. Don't lift your feet too high when you walk. This will waste energy and make you more likely to trip.
2. Increase Your Stride
Take longer steps. To do this, reach out with your front foot and plant it on the ground in front of you. Then, drive your back foot forward and push off with your toes.
Step more quickly. Don't take too much time between steps. Walk at a steady, brisk pace.
Shorten your ground contact time. The amount of time your foot is in contact with the ground is called your ground contact time. When walking faster, you should try to shorten this time by pushing off with your toes as soon as possible after landing.
3. Build Up Speed
Start slowly and gradually increase your speed. If you're new to walking, don't try to walk too fast too soon. Start by walking at a comfortable pace and then gradually increase your speed over time.
Vary your pace. Don't walk at the same pace for your entire walk. Vary your pace by walking faster for a few steps and then slower for a few steps. This will help to keep you from getting bored and tired.
Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water before, during, and after your walks to stay hydrated. Dehydration can make you feel tired and weak, which will slow you down.
Set goals for yourself. Give yourself something to work towards by setting goals for yourself. For example, you might set a goal to walk 10,000 steps per day or to walk a 5K race.
