慉 healthy mind in a healthy body'
We've grown up listening to this verdict. It's true to a great extent. Physical fitness and health plat a great role in our mental well being. Not only do we perform daily tasks with more alacrity, we are better decision makers and have greater confidence levels. Being unhealthy, no matter if we're underweight or overweight, has disadvantages at al levels of human existence. It slows us down physically, we're at greater risk for diseases like Diabetes, high blood pressure and it recks havoc for our self-esteem. Given that the number of people today who suffer from some kind chronic health condition or are going through a life of obesity, it seems that the picture of good health and fitness is a mere mirage. The facts, on the contrary, beg to differ. Being healthy and fit is not an amazing feat that can either be accomplished through heroic acts of chivalry or inherited. Here we discuss the fundamentals of health and fitness.
Sound, healthy lifestyle choices and habits are all that it takes to have amazing health, both physically and mentally. The sad part is that for most part of our lives, the choices we make and the habits we adopt tend to be the reaction to one ad campaign or the other. TV commercials that show healthy young people eating junk food instead healthy nutritious meals gives us a very wrong message about what a healthy diet is. Responsible media campaigning is another issue; here I'd just like to focus on the habits that can get our life back on the right track to health and fitness.
1. Quit Junk Food: there are two reasons why I give this prime importance. Firstly, for the part of my life I spent struggling with weight issues, I was eating junk food myself. I wasn't a couch potato, but I had a fair part of my daily diet in the bag of chips. The result was a body out of proportion, low energy levels and an even less gumption to do something in life. The best change I felt in my overall fitness was when I quit junk food, after watching an Oprah Winfrey show featuring Dr. Mehmet Oz. That was an eye opener. The horrors that being a 慾unkie' were doing to my body and health were too much to be allowed. So out went the bag of chips and in came the carrot sticks.
2. Water:
Water, water, every where,
Nor any drop to drink.
It's amazing how Coleridge's Ancient Mariner could so aptly describe our health predicament. We are surrounded by water, pure clan and healthy, but we choose to (the poor Ancient Mariner had no choice) drink anything but water. The human body is naturally 70% water and blood is 92% water and when we choose to replace these proportions with soft drinks and Alcohol, the resulting dehydration destroys our natural processes. A healthy adult should drink 8 glasses of water daily, as it naturally cleanses our body, provides a healthy supply of oxygen to our various organs and helps speed up our metabolism.
3. Balanced Diet: a balanced diet containing healthy proteins, carbohydrates, fats is essential for health and fitness. A healthy diet is composed 30% of protein, 30% of carbohydrates and 20% of fats. But by protein it means you'll focus on healthy protein found in white meat and beans. Carbs means to take complex carbs found in whole grain, whole wheat, brown sugar, etc. and unsaturated fats are components of a healthy diet rather than the saturated ones. Also take plenty of fruits and vegetables to provide your body with an ample supply of vitamins and minerals.
4. Take exercise: inactivity will destroy your health. Incorporate a 30 minute workout into your daily activity. Try doing some light cardio such as aerobics.
