The One Thing You Need to Do if You Want to Lose Weight
There are many different ways to lose weight. Lots of people go on diets. Some people try the latest exercise craze. Others take the newest supplements.
But it’s safe to say that for most people who want to lose weight, no matter which method they try, they can’t get it right. Even if they get some initial success, it’s hard to keep it going, and eventually when they give up, the weight comes back. It’s a frustrating, soul-destroying process. But what if the reason why most people fail to lose weight is that they are focused on the wrong thing? Most people who have yet to find success are continually looking for the next big thing that will save them. Maybe this combination of foods will get me there? Maybe this exercise machine will actually make me want to exercise? Maybe this special supplement will finally help me to lose weight? But the problem with all of these solutions is that they are focussed in the wrong direction. They are focussed on a solution that is “out there.” We can think that the next new diet is going to save us. But it’s putting too much emphasis on the external solution. And the reason why none of these things have worked in the past is they ignore the most important factor of all: you. Or more specifically: your habits. Your habits, which are behaviors that you have performed for so long that they've become ingrained, are what make you who you are. Habits are the things that you do each day that give rise to your results in every single area of your life. And your weight is no exception. Any new diet has to contend with your ingrained habits. If you ignore your habits, and try and force a new diet on yourself, you will soon find that it doesn’t last. As soon as your old habits come back, you will gain back weight. So what’s the answer? Forget what’s "out there." And focus on what’s "in here." Your weight is not going to get under control simply by going on a different diet each year. The only way you are going to be able to lose weight and keep it off, is by changing yourself. You need to become the kind of person who is able to manage their weight naturally. And you do that by changing your habits. How do you change your habits? Simply by repeating a behavior over and over again. But there's more to it than that. You maximize your chance of making the new eating habits stick if you make them easy to fit into your existing lifestyle. In other words, don't go for drastic changes that you don't really want to do. The changes you make need to be ones that you would be happy doing for the rest of your life. You don’t need to feel bad about previous attempts at weight loss. You don’t need to be on the lookout for the next best thing in weight loss. Instead, you need to focus on how you can become the kind of person who is able to maintain their weight for life.
