5 Motivational Tips To Help You Lose Weight (Even If You Feel Like Giving Up)

Have you gained weight instead of losing it? Are you ready to quit? Believe me, we’ve all been there and experienced the same feelings you’re suffering through right now.

Take a deep breath, and remind yourself that you can do this. Check out the tips below to motivate yourself when you really feel like giving up. As a dietician who specializes in weight loss and wellness coaching, I can tell you these strategies have really helped my clients:

1. Make a list of your healthy victories.

If your goal is to lose weight, it’s easy to forget all the other amazing things you’re achieving along your journey. Pull out a notebook or your phone and write down your successes. Maybe you haven’t lost double digits yet, but do you feel better? Do you have more energy? Are you eating healthier foods? Moving more?

Write it ALL down. When you feel those nagging thoughts telling you that you can’t do it or you aren’t good enough — remind yourself that you are making progress every day.

2. Set an intention for your day.

Every morning, take a few minutes to set an intention for your day. Write it down or say it in your head and recall it throughout the day. This simple practice allows you to center yourself, be present and have a purpose for the day. Here are a couple examples:

Today, I choose to nurture my body and soul with nourishing foods and kind words.

Today, I choose to live from a place of authentic truth and make choices that will brighten my spirit.

3. Remind yourself of your why.

Remember why you started this weight-loss journey. I don’t mean for superficial reasons, like six-pack abs or skinny jeans.

Focus on why you decided to live a healthier, happier life. Find the reasons and write them down. Make them clear in your mind. Once you find your why, you’ll find your way more easily.

4. Use your mistakes as learning lessons.

A big part of life is messing up, falling off track and, yes, even feeling like a failure. This is how we grow. Stop beating yourself up and find a way to learn from whatever it is you failed at.

If you skipped an evening workout because you were too tired, try to work out in the morning instead. If you keep splurging on unhealthy lunches, try to set aside 15 minutes each morning to prepare a healthy homemade one. Life gets so much easier with this simple shift.

5. Stop comparing yourself to everyone else.

It’s human nature to look at our friends, the media and social networks and feel like we should be somewhere else in our life — following the new diet, joining the latest fitness class or having lost the weight already.

You are on your own journey. If you start comparing yourself to everyone else, you’ll become overwhelmed and frustrated. Quiet the outside noise and listen to your heart. You know you’re on the right path, and you’ll figure out how to stay on it.
