Low-fat foods are often loaded with sugar, which spikes insulin and prompts our body to store fat
Nutritionist and author Christine Cronau says the most common error women make with their eating is consuming low-fat foods.
“The most common mistake is to use a low-fat diet. It sounds strange, but low-fat foods are often loaded with sugar, which spikes insulin and prompts our body to store fat,” Cronau says.
A 200 gram tub of yoghurt typically has seven teaspoons of sugar in it, warns the author of The Fat Revolution. What’s more, certain types of fat are actually helpful, even for weight loss.
“Contrary to popular belief, the short and medium-chain fatty acids in butter and coconut oil are used for instant energy; they are not stored in the body, so eating the right fats can’t make you fat.”
The parting shot is that eating good fats will help you feel fuller for longer, so you won’t need to reach for those extra two snacks. Makes you want to sing the ‘have an avo’ theme song, doesn’t it?
