5 Tips to Keep You From Overeating

So you want to lose weight. You head to the health food store, stock up on all the organic good stuff and cruise home to put together an eating plan and workout schedule. It sounds pretty straight forward, right?

But then you workout hard and you pack your plate with one too many portions and tell yourself you worked for it. It sounds fine at first, but when weeks go by and you’ve yet to drop a pound, you may need to reconsider your food intake.

And that’s just one scenario. On the other end of the spectrum is eating too little, which scares your body into starvation mode, slowing your metabolism down. You skip breakfast, you eat a small portion at lunch, and then you come home after work and run to the pantry to engulf the first thing you see. That cheat snack saved for Sunday has been consumed on Wednesday, and so begins your downward spiral.

Overeating is not your best friend, under eating isn’t either, and binging is your waistline’s enemy. So how do we take control and really get the results we desire? Here are five tips to ensure you stay on the right track.

1. Keep it real.

Don’t buy the chemical-ridden products. Just because it says it’s low in calories doesn’t mean it’s good for you. Instead, opt for real, whole, unprocessed foods like vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans, nuts, seeds, olive oil, organic, range, or grass-fed animal products (poultry, lamb, beef, pork, eggs), and wild, smaller fish.

2. Don’t skip meals.

Especially breakfast! They say it’s the most important meal of the day, and for a good reason. It gets your metabolism going, and keeps you from overeating at other meals.

3. Be conscious.

Don’t scarf down your meal without thought. Doing so will keep you from realizing when you’re full, causing you to overeat since it takes about 20 minutes after you start eating for your body to realize it’s had enough.

4. Make sure to exercise.

It’s a surefire way to lose weight, maintain weight and control weight. It also aids in controlling your appetite so that you don’t overeat!

5. Control your stress levels.

Stress eating is a real thing. Your day-to-day, from work to family to love can all create roadblocks for you, but be mindful of how you respond to them, because too much stress can cause you to overeat.

What tips can you add to this list that have helped you to have a healthier relationship with food?
