Metabolism is that recurring word in the health world that we all try to be very conscious of. We’re constantly trying to figure out how to understand it — how to keep it from slowing down, how to turbo-charge it, and what foods and lifestyle habits affect it the most. But have you ever felt like you’ve read the book on metabolism from front to back, yet still have so many questions, and so many concerns as to why everything you’re doing doesn’t seem to be working? The health world is tricky. There are so many facts, and so many opinions turned myths mixed in that keep us from really getting down to the nitty gritty truth behind it all. Here are three of the biggest metabolism myths busted.
1. Breakfast is your metabolism’s best friend.
It’s widely known not to skip breakfast for a variety of reasons, one of which includes its benefit on kickstarting your metabolism. But a study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition discovered that breakfast had zero impact on resting metabolism. So, even though it’s a great meal to get energy-boosting nutrients into your day, it’s not necessary if you’re pressed on time.
2. Hot work outs are the weight loss elixir to try
Hot yoga, hot cycling … hot anything! We step out of an hour long sweat sesh and feel 10 pounds lighter. We’ll never go back to a standard work out class with fans blasting ever again!
Contrary to the big “hot” fad, new research published in the journal Diabetes found that cooler temperatures may be the path to weight loss. The study suggests that switching on the AC at night may work to transform a person’s stores of brown fat, which is known as the “good” fat, by burning through “bad” fat stores when trying to keep our bodies warm.
3. Don’t eat carbs after dark
We’ve been told that our carb intake is meant for the day, when we’re moving around and can burn it off. But a study in the European Journal of Nutrition found that idea to be false. Splitting into two groups of men on identical weight loss diets, the study had the first group eat their carbs throughout the day, and had the second reserve their carbs for nighttime. The latter group proved to burn more calories digesting their food the next day!
