Calorie Control Versus Exercise: Two Scientists’ Findings on Weight Loss

When we’re trying to lose weight, we take into consideration all the obstacles that will keep us from achieving what we so badly want. We know eating pasta for breakfast, lunch and dinner is a no-no. We know sitting on the couch all day with a bag of potato chips isn’t going to help either.

Typically, we think of a proper diet and exercise as the two main ingredients needed to slim down and tone up. But the controversy continues over how each plays a role in your body shape, and with new research popping up, you may want to reconsider your weight loss strategy.

Public health scientists Richard S. Cooper, MD and Amy Luke, PhD of Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine, have found that contrary to popular belief, working out does not have an effect on your weight loss. Though there are plenty of other incredible benefits that come from regular exercise, including reducing the risk of heart disease, diabetes and cancer, as well as improving mental health and mood, the scientists believe the link between physical activity and obesity is slim to none.

What the scientists found instead was that with increased appetite comes increased activity, and therefore individuals compensate by eating more food. Because of this, with or without exercise, calorie control continues to remain the most important part of dropping pounds or maintaining a healthy weight.

“This crucial part of the public health message is not appreciated in recommendations to be more active, walk up stairs and eat more fruits and vegetables,” Drs. Cooper and Luke explained. “The prescription needs to be precise: There is only one effective way to lose weight – eat fewer calories.”

Have you found that no matter how much you exercise you can’t lose weight? Healthy eating is the key!
