Do you dread counting calories? There may not be a need for it. Several researchers have found, that individuals should put more focus on eating more nutritious foods instead.
Just like when people quit smoking, they will see a significant improvement with the risk of heart disease. There was a study that included 2,000 heart attack survivors, and the ones who were told to consume fish were the ones who were least likely to die during the study period than the individuals who didn’t consume fish.
In contrast, trans fat is an unhealthy ingredient that is in many common foods. It can increase inflammatory marker levels in an individual’s blood within just weeks. Researchers also state that not every calorie should be considered equal. For example, when someone drinks a can of soda that is around 150 calories each day, it can increase the link for type 2 diabetes. However, if someone was to eat one handful of nuts or even consume four tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil, at around 500 calories each, it would actually decrease the risk of stroke and heart disease.
There was a study conducted in 2013 that suggested dietary changes are related to reduced risk of heart disease, regardless of individual’s weight. Although, some experts will disagree with the advice to stop counting calories. Katherine Tallmadge, registered dietitian, stated that it was a bit of an exaggeration to stop counting calories. She believes people need to be doing both; concentrate on healthy ingredients and count calories.
Tallmadge also said that weight loss is crucial when it comes to improving someone’s overall health. Obesity by itself can contribute to many risk factors for diseases. Body fat is toxic and when there is an excess of it, it can lead to poor immune system, diabetes, cancer, and heart disease.
What is your opinion on this? Do you feel that both, counting calories and watching labels is necessary? Or just one of them? We would love to hear your opinion.
