Are you constantly complaining of feeling bloated? You’re not alone. In fact, David T. Rubin, M.D., fellow of the American College of Gastroenterology and chief of gastroenterology, hepatology, and nutrition at The University of Chicago Medicine says that many of his own patients complain of feeling this way, even snapping selfies to prove their waistlines are experiencing fluctuation as the day goes on.
But Rubin says bloating, which is simply excess gas and air in the digestive tract, is brought on by more than just what you consume. These everyday habits may be the reason you’re experiencing that uncomfortable feeling.
1. Chewing gum
“A lot of people chew gum to keep them from eating between meals, but when you chew gum, you unwittingly swallow some air,” explains registered dietitian nutritionist Bonnie Taub-Dix, R.D.N. And not only do many gums contain sugar alcohols which cause bloating and gas, but all that extra air you’re allowing into your system is causing your intestines to feel blown up!
2. Scarfing your food
“Digestion starts in the mouth, not in the stomach,” explains nutritionist Rania Batayneh, M.P.H., author of The One One One Diet: The Simple 1:1:1 Formula for Fast and Sustained Weight Loss. So when you scarf down your food, you’re body has to work extra hard to digest it, which leads to gas.
3. Drinking through a straw
Next time you take a sip, make sure it’s straight from the lid and not from a straw. “Every time you sip through a straw, air comes up before the liquid,” says Taub-Dix, owner of Better Than Dieting nutrition consultancy and author of Read It Before You Eat It.
