The Answer to How Many Meals You Should Really Be Eating a Day

When it comes to weight loss, there are a lot of opinions out there. There are also a lot of questions, like “Should I eat three big meals a day, or be a grazer and opt for many small meals throughout the day?”

While diet books and research in the past have attributed smaller, more frequent meals to weight loss due to the body’s ability to digest at a better rate as opposed to throwing a boulder of calories down the hatch three times per day, new research begs to differ.

“Even three meals might be too much,” says Dr. Valter Longo, director of the University of Southern California’s Longevity Institute. And while you might be on your fourth meal before lunch right at this moment, you may want to hear Longo’s reasoning for feeling like there is absolutely “no question” as to whether or not people should be eating fewer meals.

People are typically assuming they’re consuming fewer calories than they actually are. “If something’s 500 calories, people guess 250,” Longo says. He also says that with more meals, we may forget just how much we’re putting into our mouths each time, therefore creating a downward spiral towards overeating.

And to further back up Longo’s reasoning, there is the 2013 study from Cornell University, which found that when people removed a meal from their typical eating schedule, they ate about 400 fewer calories per day.

What do you think of these new findings?
