If You Want To Lose Weight, Take A Closer Look At This Magic Veggie!

It may not be nearly as trendy as its cousin, kale, but this vegetable deserves a closer look, and a lot of love, especially if you are hoping to drop a few pounds. It is not a miracle food that can burn fat from your body but it is jam packed with so much goodness that it should play a major role in any healthy diet.

Brassica vegetables, which include kale, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower and cabbage, contain sulforaphane, an antioxidant that helps stimulate natural detoxifying enzymes which can prevent certain forms of cancer.

Okay, so cabbage can’t actually burn your fat away but it can be an asset to your diet in that it is an incredibly low calorie food. In fact, half a cup of cabbage contains only 17 calories! Dr. Jonny Bowden, Ph.D. and clinical nutrition specialist, says that a single cup of cabbage contains four grams of dietary fiber. Dietary fiber can help to stabilize your blood sugar levels and prevent overeating.

Cabbage (as well as the other brassica veggies) are a great source of vitamin C and contain vitamins A, B1, B2 and B6 which help to support your metabolism. These vitamins are also helpful in maintaining tissue health during your weight loss process.

So, what do you look for in a cabbage? When cruising the produce aisles, look for a tightly packed, heavy bulb with the brightest colour you can find. You won’t have to eat it right away, it will stay fresh in this whole form for up to two weeks. If you want to do some meal time prep work in advance, cabbage will stay fresh 5-7 days when chopped.

Are you having terrible childhood flashbacks of a limp colourless vegetable that makes the entire house smell like sulphur? If boiled or overheated, cabbage loses its colour, and the nutrients release that horrible smell. So, the best, and most nutritious, way to eat cabbage is raw, steamed or lightly sautéed.

Working cabbage into your meals isn’t as hard as you might think. Try this cabbage soup recipe  or this fabulous slaw. Looking for something heartier? Try this Sriracha Beef Cabbage bowl! And don’t forget to get a little cabbage in the morning! If you’re adding spinach or kale to your smoothies, swap it out for cabbage. You’ll be pleasantly surprised!

Do you love cabbage? What are your favourite dishes?
