Have you ever seen the wildly popular TV show The Biggest Loser? If you have, you should be able to recognize the trainer on the show, Jillian Michaels, from a mile away. She’s the hot-body no-nonsense trainer that whips flabby contestants into shape.
This may be hard to believe, but Jillian Michaels used to have a weight problem herself. That’s right. In a recent interview she revealed that she used to tip the scales at a hefty 175 lbs – nearly 50 pounds overweight. How did she trim down to get where she is today? Turns out, she used a number of fast weight loss tips that propelled her from chubby no-name to slender celebrity. Here are a few of her best fast weight loss tips.
One thing that Jillian swears by is strength training. Sure cardio is great for fat burning, but she said that pumping iron is responsible for her bodily transformation – not slaving hours on a treadmill like a laboratory rat!
The catalyst for Jillian’s weight loss journey didn’t come from stepping inside her local YMCA and peddling non-stop on an exercise bike. Far from it.
In fact, after seeing her daughter struggle with her weight for years, Jillian’s mom decided to enroll her in a karate class. Since then, Jillian has suggested that people don’t limit their exercise to a boring gym. She encourages people to expand their exercise horizons and try activities like Pilates and kickboxing.
If you’re wondering what Jillian actually ate to drop all of those pounds, it’s probably not what you think. She didn’t do a 7-day cleanse, the cabbage soup diet, or even low-carb. Regarding fad diets, she proclaims: “We all know that fad diets are a thing of the past, and that the no-carb and low-fat crazes of the eighties and nineties are a scientific laughing stocks and pop-culture dinosaurs”.
Instead of succumbing to the empty promise of fad diets, she ate sensibly by cutting calories. Not only did she lose weight just as quickly as if she had used a fad diet, but as you can see from her body, she actually kept it off.
So if you are like Jillian Michaels used to be: heavier than you would like to be and frustrated with the results you have been getting, give these fast weight loss tips a shot. You just might find yourself slim, slender, and hosting your own prime time TV show! You may also want to buy some of her excellent workout DVD’s. Just remember to read the reviews first.
In October 2010 Jillian Michaels was in the news after the LA Times suggested that she was not properly qualified to teach kettlebells. The La Times’ fitness writer, James Fell, attacked Jillian Michaels from NBC’s The Biggest Loser, claiming that she was a fraud, just an actress who makes workout DVD’s. Fell is a certified strength and conditioning specialist as well as fitness writer.
The article in the LA Times was about Jillian Michaels’ new kettlebell workout DVD Shred-it With Weights. Fell opens his article with “I don’t know much about proper kettlebell techniques. Neither does Jillian Michaels“. He then takes a look at her credentials, by looking at her website:
“The biography on her website goes on and on about her multimedia endeavours, but there is not a single mention of any health-and-fitness education or credentials.” La Times / James Fell
Fell also states that Jillians fitness certificates (that are not actually required to teach people how to get fit anyway), have expired. He also suggests that her fantastic appearance is “possibly Photoshopped“.
The main criticism is that her kettlebell technique is not up to scratch. He consulted a kettlebell expert, and according to Dave Cheng from an LA fitness club her technique showed poor form.
Jillian Michaels has now hit back and said that she will peruse these allegations to the highest level. She made a statement in an interview with USMagazine.com that the claims out of order:
“Apparently I’m an actress,” Michaels, 36, sarcastically told UsMagazine.com. “Shame on the Los Angeles Times for saying I’m a fraud and not a trainer. I currently own two certifications, one of which doesn’t expire. I developed my own continuing education program for trainers, with sports medicine doctors. I’ve been a trainer since I was 17-years old for 19 years.”
She told USMagazine.com that she is planning to take legal action.
Fitness and health is suddenly in the media spotlight, and for all the wrong reasons. After years of anti obesity campaigns and health and fitness initiatives, the biggest story is about a journalist making remarks about a popular fitness instructor.
What is most important when it comes to health, fitness and weight loss, is that people are educated on various ways to get fit, that there are healthy role models for people to follow and that fitness is more accessible.
Also, it is important to remember that you do not have to employ s fully qualified person to help you get fit and lose weight. Qualifications are useful for finding employment and show that you have an in depth knowledge of fitness and health issues, but that does not mean that someone without qualifications cannot teach you.
Many people have trained in athletics, sports, martial arts and weight training for many years and never gained any certificates or qualifications, but they are often better equipped to help others get in shape than those with a nicely framed certificate on the wall. The only important question is: do the methods work and are they safe? If the answer is yes, then just get on with it. There are many ways to learn how to exercise with kettlebells including DVDs, books, and personal tuition.
Jillian Michaels does a great job at teaching the masses through television and DVD how to exercise and get in shape. That is what is important. Maybe her kettlebell form in the DVD is not perfect, but nobody is ever perfect in all areas.
Keep up the good work Jillian, we love you!
